Smartbell is seeking talented individuals with a passion for developing innovative, software-based solutions for the role of ML Data Scientist. Our headquarters is based in the heart of Cambridge, UK and the company is expanding operations with a second base of operations in Chennai, India.

As an ML Data Scientist for Smartbell, you will have the opportunity to work with datasets of sensor data gathered from animal mounted sensors and other environmental data sources.

You will work on interrogating the data to discover how well the sensor picks up changes in the animal’s behavioural patterns, detecting trends and anomalies for individual animals as well groups to uncover relationships with the animal’s health, fertility and productivity. This involves data clean up, feature engineering, anomaly detection, model building, evaluation of results, and data visualisation techniques.

We are looking to hire a highly creative ML Data Scientist to address data analytics challenges, the company collects large volumes of data from varying sources to create solutions to overcome challenges in animal health and process management creating effective communications with farms, vets and other interested parties.

This role offers an opportunity for candidates to expand their talents by participating directly in the development of production software. Individual visibility within the team is high, and there are opportunities for advancement with successful delivery. All levels of Smartbell’s software engineers work directly on production-level code in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment on products with a rapid time to market.

Qualified candidates possess the ability to design programs and systems based on defined requirements; to prepare program specifications; to code, test, and debug software; to interpret technical information relating to software development; and to communicate effectively. The position involves developing new applications and extending the capabilities of the existing application.

Roles and Responsibilities

Apply your ML modelling skills to train, validate and test models for interpreting sensor data
Work with the team members, understand end-user requirements and develop appropriate applications
Methodical analysis of the efficacy of different approaches and present clear recommendations to the team and management
Write and maintain programming documentation on subjects including code, API functionality, and software issue creation/resolution
Maintain confidentiality with regard to information being processed, stored, or accessed

Desired Candidate Profile

Masters’ degree or higher in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics or relevant field (equivalent commercial experience will be considered)
4+ years of experience
Ability to write high quality, well-structured and tested Python code
Good understanding of training, validation, testing and metrics for deep learning models
Proficient in Python, R, SQL, or other programming languages for data analysis.
Comfortable working with and visualising huge data sets. Experience with data wrangling, exploration, and visualisation tools such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, matplotlib, seaborn, etc.
Experience with machine learning frameworks and platforms such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Spark MLlib, etc.
Experience with cloud computing services such as AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.
Strong knowledge of statistical concepts and methods, such as hypothesis testing, regression, classification, clustering, etc.
Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Any prior experience with signal processing and understanding of time series sensor data or image processing and analysis is a plus
